Create Your Own Handwoven Tote Bag

Sunday, 29th September, 10am - 3pm

$140, bookings by phone - (02) 4759 3478 - or in store today!

In this 5 hour workshop, you will create your own bespoke woven tote bag using natural materials such as cotton and linen, as well as repurposed woollen waste yarn, known as #iwaslandfill

With the global push towards sustainability and slow fashion, there is a growing desire to create our own clothing and accessories using time honoured skills passed on by our ancestors.

The ancient art of weaving is the foundation of making all fabric/cloth. The slow repetitive motions of weaving create a relaxed mediative state of mind while the hands are kept busy and the cloth grows in length, texture and beauty.

To create your individual piece, you will learn to weave on a Rigid Heddle loom, a simple two shaft loom which allows the weaver freedom to express their own style within the cloth.

Techniques such as tabby, soumak, rya and creating loop pile will be covered. We will also learn the warping process and finishing techniques to complete our own unique tote bag.

All materials are included to complete your own tote:

- Organic cotton & linen thread;

- #iwaslandfill woollen yarn;

- Wooden/Ceramic buttons;

- Use of Ashford weaving looms & tools.

About your tutor:

Rebecca Muscat is a Blue Mountains Fibre Artist working primarily in loom weaving and macrame, crochet and embroidery.

Using the natural environment as a source of eternal inspiration, Rebecca favours a sparse, neutral palette to highlight the texture and form of her two & three dimensional works.

With a particular interest in slow fashion and the maker movement, Rebecca’s aim is to promote each person’s creative process as a form of mindfulness & self care.

With a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts, she finds such joy in sharing these skills to creatively energise others.
