Frequently asked questions

What is a co-operative?

A co-operative is an autonomous association of people coming together over common interests, and is democratically managed by it’s members.

Lyttleton Stores Co-operative is a non-distributive consumer co-op, where profits are not distributed among members, but rather invested back into the co-op and wider community.

We operate in a non-hierarchical framework where workers, board members and general members share decision making power.

This means that each of the members of the Lyttleton Stores Co-operative owns an equal share of the business.

Why become a co-operative member?

Membership entitles you to a 10% discount off everything at Lyttleton Stores Co-operative, from produce and artworks to workshops and events.

Each membership has one vote at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) where major decisions are made.

Members are eligible to nominate and be elected for office holding positions on the Board of Directors who make minor decisions and meet monthly.

Members can volunteer to be part of subcommittees for projects and events organised by the coordinators. Coordinators make decisions on daily operations and meet together weekly, and monthly with the board.

We are also setting up a volunteer program for our co-op members which will involve daily tasks helping at the store to receive further discounted shopping.

Do you do reciprocal membership discounts for other co-operatives?

Unfortunately we are unable to offer discounts to members of other co-operatives at this stage due to being new and not able to financially maintain that promise at this stage. Hopefully one day we will be able to make that happen; this kind of decision would be decided on by our members at an AGM.

If coming from Katoomba or westbound, please turn left at the traffic lights onto San Jose Avenue across the railway bridge. The left turn comes as you see the train station.
